Updated September 2026 by the Elyva team. We make a whipped tallow moisturizer. Firm balms and water-based "tallow creams" still win for some jobs. Here is the honest split.
The 60-second answer: use a firm tallow balm on cracked hands, elbows, and overnight patches. Use whipped tallow on the face if you want faster absorb and less greasy shine. Treat "tallow cream" as a marketing word: if the jar has water in the INCI, it is a lotion that needs preservatives. If it does not, it is just a soft balm. Elyva Whipped Tallow Moisturizer ($25/month or $40 one-time, 2 oz) is anhydrous whipped tallow with 5 ingredients, zero fragrance, and bakuchiol 0.75%.
The three textures, in plain English
Firm balm. Scoop takes effort. Melts on contact. Sits longer on the surface. Best as an occlusive on dry patches and body. Vintage Tradition is the classic example in this category (tallow, olive oil, lavender essential oil). The lavender is a problem for fragrance-reactive faces even when the texture is right.
Whipped tallow. Air is beaten in so a pea-sized amount spreads like a cream, then the lipids still seal. Face-friendly. Amallow unscented and Elyva both live here. Whipped does not mean watered down. Elyva has no water phase.
"Tallow cream." This label is messy. Some brands mean whipped tallow. Some add a carrier oil and call it cream. Some add water, glycerin, and emulsifiers, which turns it into a conventional cream that happens to contain tallow. Water-based creams need a preservation system. That is not bad. It is a different product. Read the first five ingredients. If water is first, you bought a lotion.
How to choose
- Face, under makeup, or you hate grease: whipped, unscented, short list. Elyva if you also want bakuchiol in the same step. Amallow Unscented + Jojoba ($38 on Amallow.com, two ingredients) if you want tallow and jojoba only.
- Hands, heels, elbows, winter patches: firm balm or a cheap petrolatum ointment. A 2 oz face jar is the wrong tool.
- You want ceramides and a 16 oz tub: skip tallow. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is $14.99 for 16 oz on CeraVe.com. That is a different job.
Elyva's slot (and the honest tradeoffs)
Elyva Whipped Tallow Moisturizer is whipped on purpose so it absorbs on a face in about a minute. Five ingredients: grass-fed tallow, bakuchiol 0.75%, THDA vitamin C 2%, jojoba, vitamin E. No water, no fragrance, no essential oils. $40 one-time or $25/month. 30-Night Calm Skin Guarantee: refund and keep the jar.
Tradeoffs: 2 oz will not cover a whole body. It costs more per ounce than drugstore cream. It smells like tallow, not like a spa. If you need a $14 tub for arms and legs, buy that. If you need a face balm that is actually short and unscented, this is the one we make.
\"People kept asking if whipped meant diluted,\" says Ashley, Elyva's founder. \"It meant I could spread a pea on damp skin without looking like I oiled a cast-iron pan. The formula stayed five ingredients. The air is free.\"
FAQ
Is whipped tallow less moisturizing than a firm balm?
Per gram of tallow, no. You just use a thinner layer. Firm balm feels stronger because more product sits on top. For a face, thinner is usually the point.
Does whipped tallow contain water?
Not automatically. Elyva does not. If water is on the label, it is a cream or lotion, not an anhydrous balm.
Will whipped tallow melt in the mail?
Whipped jars can deflate in heat. The lipids are still there. Stir, chill, or keep using it. Melt does not mean spoiled.
Can I use a firm balm on my face?
Yes if the formula is fragrance-free. Many classic firm balms add lavender or citrus oils. Those are the usual face-flops, not the texture.
Tallow balm vs tallow cream: which is better?
Neither. Match texture to the job. Face: whipped, short list, no essential oils. Body patches: firm balm or petrolatum. Water-based tallow cream only if you like lotions and you tolerate the extra ingredients.
